About

Hello!

I am a 33-year-old special education teacher at a transfer charter high school in Brooklyn, NYC. Originally from Canada, I have lived and taught in Seoul, Toronto, and New York City.  I have experience teaching in the Department of Education schools, as well as private schools over the years.  I have taught a number of subjects including English, ESL, Geography, Living Environment, US and Global History, Careers, and American Sign Language (ASL). I have taught using ASL as the language of instruction to Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students, as well as teaching ASL as a language to hearing high school students.

I grew up in an ASL/English bilingual family where both languages were used interchangeably (not simultaneously). I have a lifetime of experience signing, studying, and using ASL.

Outside of Sign Language, I currently teach different subjects in New York City, including ELA, Living Environment, Global, and US History. I have taught Regents Exams classes many times as well.

Students tend to learn the best when they have a teacher that is both knowledgeable and passionate about their content. ASL is my favorite course to teach because I truly love it. I bet you will, too!

As a special education teacher, I'm all about differentiating my instruction. Based on my student(s),  lessons will look different. Some students prefer more structure, others prefer classes to be more conversational. I use Google docs and Goggle Classroom most often, but I've used many other platforms over the years.  Students who have more time to study outside of class time can make use of a blended learning structure.  I like to use uploaded videos to provide feedback for my student's sign language and have space online where students can pose questions and ideas.

American Sign Language for Kids

Group Class Now Enrolling

In addition to the private lessons that can be booked from this page, Charlie McNulty is offering a group class titled American Sign Language for Kids. The class will meet for 4 sessions on Thursdays, starting October 6. Learn more and sign up here.

I'm flexible. Learning online is a fantastic way to learn ASL. I have taught ASL a number of times over the last 9 years,  but I tend to adapt materials for each student, depending on their language goals. My main recommended texts are A Basic Course of American Sign Language by Terrence J. O'Rourke and Tom Humphries and Signing Naturally (level 1) by Cheri Smith, Ella Mae Lentz, and Ken Mikos. In addition, I have attached some other useful resources.  I have used other online platforms to teach ASL in the past (such as Blackboard and Google Classroom). You can check out a video I have posted below giving feedback to a student via video conferencing.
