Description:
This will be a workshop style class where the teacher will demonstrate some aspect of the material, and then give time throughout the class for the students to try it on their own. There will also be the opportunity to play in front of the class and receive some constructive feedback from the teacher. We will apply all we cover in class to short musical examples. If you’d prefer not to play in front of the class, you’re totally welcome to participate by simply following along and playing on your own. Materials provided, PDFs will need to be printed out prior to the class. Parent attendance highly recommended for students of this age range.

Objectives (each class will focus on one or more of the following):
Look together at the elements of the written music
Make observations about what gives the music its mood and style.
Activities to refine posture, bow hold, violin position, left hand position, left and right arm movements
Refine basic bow strokes as legato, detache, and staccato, and learn how to divide the use of the bow correctly
Prepare for more advanced bow strokes including spiccato and martele
Activities to help understand different meters and rhythmic training, and apply to level appropriate music
Introduce mini scales in more difficult keys
Strategies to make most efficient use of practice time, and how to overcome hurdles in pieces

ABOUT MIGUEL RAMIREZ

I have been teaching violin privately for the past 20 years. During this time, my students have progressed and enjoyed their lessons so much that they tend to stick around for many years! I have had students accepted into Eastman School of Music, Mannes School of Music, Bard Conservatory, Meadowmount School of Music, Eastman Music Horizons, and California CODA Honors/All-State Orchestras.

STUDENTS SAY

Miguel is an amazing instructor! My daughter has improved tremendously over the course of just one year while working with him. He focuses on a broad range of skills to provide a well rounded education and good comprehension of music. I would definitely recommend working with him because he’s patient and goes out of his way to help his students while teaching important fundamentals of playing.

— Yukiko K., Private Student on Lessonface

Miguel is an amazing teacher. Both my girls feel more comfortable and at ease with their lessons and feel that their orchestra sessions are so much more enjoyable and easy after lessons with Miguel. He is patient and kind yet meticulous in his teaching.
