About

I teach all styles of mandolin from bluegrass to ethnic and everything in between. I can help beginners get started and show experienced players how to fine tune their sound.

I have been playing mandolin for the past 40 years and have been teaching for the past 20 years. I have played in bluegrass bands in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York. I have  been a contributing writer or Mandolin Magazine, and I was the founder of the modern day Pittsburgh Mandolin Orchestra. During that time I have always made a point of taking mandolin lessons and workshops from the top players in the world and I try to share what I have learned when I teach others in both individual lessons and workshops. I play all styles from bluegrass to ethnic music.

To hear an example of my mandolin playing check out my new CD  Sunset on Meriden Hill an all instrumental recording of some of my favorite tunes to play on the mandolin.

I excel at helping students master fundamentals, giving them the confidence to enjoy a broad range of musical experiences. I teach all styles of mandolin from bluegrass to ethnic and everything in between. I can help beginners get started and show experienced players how to fine tune their sound.

Reviews of lessons with Alan Epstein

I was a complete beginner when I started to take mandolin lessons with Alan a few months ago and have made tons of progress! I started with his group class and have since been taking bi-weekly sessions that are just my speed. He is a kind and motivational teacher and I highly recommend him. Thanks Alan!

I met Alan at a bluegrass workshop several months ago and could see right away that he's an excellent teacher. When the opportunity came up to try the mandolin with him through Lessonface I signed up. He is very encouraging, and teaches in a structured way that works well. Starting with scales and simple tunes, all things you can use to get going, I'm learning my way around the mandolin and plan to take it to a local jam soon. Alan knows music, and plays different styles as well as composes his own. I also play banjo and some guitar, and having worked with different teachers and teaching styles can say that he's one of the best. You get a thorough understanding from Alan along with a smile, can't ask for more.
