Breakout Sessions

About Breakout Sessions

Join any of the Dance Musicians’ Week instructors in their own breakout room for the hour. Study fiddle with Betsy (including technique, ornamentation, bowing, and harmony), piano and accordion with Andy (and maybe even some clawhammer banjo), guitar and mandolin with Peter (including a variety of back-up styles), or piano with Sue (including back-up styles). Stay with the same instructor all week or sample every offering! Each day’s focus will be announced at the beginning of class so you can choose your preferred breakout room. Students who can play or accompany some tunes on their instruments and who are familiar with contra or square dance music are welcome. This class does not have a limit on students.

Betsy Branch

Betsy Branch

Betsy is a versatile musician who loves to explore multiple genres of music. She got her start at age 5 in classical music, and then in her 20’s fell in love with folk fiddle music. She has wandered her musical way through music from Ireland, Scotland, Appalachia, Quebec, Sweden, England, Bulgaria and New England, to mention a few.

Susan Songer

Susan Songer

Sue Songer has been a contra dance musician for 30 years. She plays both backup piano and fiddle, beginning in her hometown of Portland, Oregon, and eventually performing all across the States. Her specialty is piano accompaniment, which she has provided for a great many fiddlers and a number of contra dance bands.

Andy Davis

Andy Davis

Andy Davis calls New England style contra and square dances, and plays accordion and piano for traditional dances. His accordion repertoire includes New England, French Canadian and other northern dance tunes. His specialty as a dance leader is calling community events, inclusive of all abilities.

Peter Siegel

Peter Siegel

...award winning musician, educator and founding member of The Gaslight Tinkers. Peter Siegel contributes a radical chord to American Roots music. Influenced by the songwriting of Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs, dixieland, old time fiddle tunes and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Peter’s music defies categorization.
