History & Survey of Jazz Piano

Interested in learning more about jazz styles? What about the history of great pianists? Do you want new music to listen to while you’re at work or on your commute? Join in this class as we talk about key elements of listening and appreciating jazz in a whole new way! Every week, students will get a handout of key recordings that we listen to in class. While listening, we will talk about history and evolution into what jazz is today. Note that this is a survey course; we will not be playing piano. Come with your listening ears!
While there are no formal assignments,  students are welcome & encouraged to bring in their favorite recordings and the class will analyze them together!

Optional materials:

The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine (a treasure trove of material for pianists and also has great listening materials)
Ken Burns’ Jazz Documentary (a great in-depth study on the history of jazz)

Student Say

Joe Miterko was an excellent teacher! He was very patient and encouraging with my daughter. He stressed fundamentals, but also incorporates things she wants to learn to play. I highly recommend him for all ages!
