Music Theory for Songwriters

In a rut as a songwriter? This five-session live, interactive, group class explores the basics of music theory in order to open up new possibilities for you as a songwriter. Classes are held via live video conference, and are also recorded for enrolled students to re-watch later. Don't worry about missing a class, you won't miss a beat! The first of the 5 weekly sessions is Wednesday, April 5th, from 7-7:45 pm. 

As a songwriter, understanding even basic music theory creates a world of possibilities for writing. You will understand the importance of chord progressions and how this effects the music you write. This class presents an organized approach to basic music theory and gaining the knowledge needed to create more interesting songs. With materials ranging from beginner to intermediate for each subject this class is suited for students of various levels. Here are some of the topics we will cover:

  • Building Chords
  • Building Chord Progressions
  • Major and Minor Keys
  • Notating Your Music
  • Analysis of the Most Commonly Used Chords in Rock and Pop Music

 ABOUT THE TEACHER MATT MACAULAY
Matt Macaulay is an American professional Jazz guitarist and singer-songwriter. He has been teaching music to students of all ages, privately and in groups, since 1997. After graduating from William Paterson University with a Bachelors Degree in Jazz Performance, Matt spent 10 years in New York City working as a freelance musician and operating the Macaulay Guitar Studio. As a guitarist, Matt has performed extensively around the East Coast of the United States and has also released three albums of original songs under his own name.
