About

*Currently not accepting new students for the summer*

Violin Teacher of the Year 2021/2020/ 2018! 2000+ Lessons Taught. I've been teaching violin  for over 15 years, helping students achieve their musical goals. Whether you want to learn classical violin, fiddle, or both, I'm excited to help you master the violin.

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Alabama and my Master’s degree in String Pedagogy from the University of South Carolina where I specialized in group instruction and private lessons, teaching all of the stringed instruments to students ranging from ages 7 and up.

I've performed with several orchestras including the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, the USC Symphony Orchestra, Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, and the Shoals Symphony Orchestra and attended music festivals across the country including the Castleman Quartet Program, Madeline Island Music Festival, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and Kinhaven Music Festival.

In addition to music, I also love anything with wings, including birds, chickens, and airplanes. I'm currently working on my Flight Instructor certificate so I can one day teach people how to play violin and how to fly!

*Since I spend a considerable amount of time tailoring each lesson to the individual student, I have a limited number of openings for new students in my studio. Before booking a lesson, please message me with your skill level and goals to ensure that we will be a good match

Testimonials

My daughter and I have been taking lessons from Lora for a little over one year, now. We couldn't be happier. Lora's shown remarkable professionalism and flexibility. It's clear that she is genuinely interested in helping us to achieve our personal goals with the violin. She's willing to incorporate songs that we would like to learn and--at the same time--she is committed to insuring that we're always progressing in our technique, skill-level, and knowledge. We're super happy to have found her and plan to continue our lessons with her as long as we are able! --Sarah

Lora is a gifted musician and a wonderful teacher. She was able to teach our daughter great fundamentals while making it fun for her. We were so blessed to have Lora as our first teacher. --Nicole

Miss Lora has a unique gift for capturing the attention of her students. Her kindness, attention to detail, and her musical knowledge have produced children that are hungry to learn. My daughter loved her sessions with Miss Lora. I am extremely pleased with my daughter's progress after only a few months of lessons!--Renee

My goal is to give students the tools and skills they need to play the music they enjoy. Since no two students are the same, I tailor each lesson according to the student's goals.

For younger students, I've developed many activities and games to keep students engaged and excited. I incorporate ear training exercises with "echoes", improvisation games, note reading challenges, and rhythm games. Learning the violin should be fun for young children and I specialize in helping students improve in exciting new ways.

I help guide students in picking songs they like that are beneficial to their progress but I mainly let students and parents decide what musical styles and genres they would like to learn. Regardless of whether you enjoy playing fiddle, classical, or Celtic music, all of my students learn scales, note-reading, rhythms, counting, ear training, and tone production. I believe having a solid foundation in technique will make a student sound great whether they are playing George Frederic Handel or George Strait. For all of my lessons, I include detailed notes on what we worked on to guide your practice during the week.

I use several different curricula depending on the student's level and musical preferences. For beginners I use a method book and scale books.  For beginning to intermediate players I use the Suzuki Books, Solo Pieces for Intermediate Players, Developing Double Stops, Introduction to the Positions, as well as etude and scale books. Advanced students progress through concerti, sonatas and etudes while continuing scales with Hrimaly or the Flesch Scale System. This is not an extensive list of books I use and I am always open to music and books students bring to their lessons.
