Middle school band director with 10+ years of teaching in performance experience available for lessons across multiple instruments. 18 years clarinet family experience.
I have been teaching private lessons for over 10 years on various instruments and styles. I have performed with symphonies, orchestras, wind ensembles, community bands, rock bands, jazz bands and more. I have also played on church praise and worship teams for over 15 years. My performance background includes: Wind Ensembles, Community Bands, Rock Bands, Jazz Bands, Jazz Combos, Marching Bands, Featured Soloist, Orchestras, Chamber Music, Praise and Worship, Christian Rock, Gospel, Musicals, and more.
I am a well-seasoned performer and continue to hold performances and also continue to further educate myself through classes, conferences and workshops. In 2010, I graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL with a Bachelors of Music Education. My primary instrument was the clarinet, mostly bass clarinet. Following graduation, I have been working at Rock Falls Elementary District 13 as the middle school band director, 5th grade band director, and Elementary General Music Teacher. My middle school band has grown triple in size since I started running the program, and the 5th grade band has doubled in enrollment as well. The band has won multiple awards in parades and contests with students receiving "Best of the Day" awards for solos performed at contests. I am currently working on my Masters of Music Education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. It will be completed in the spring of 2016.
I have been married to my wife, Mackenzie since 2008, and have three beautiful children; my greatest achievements.
My teaching style is laid back, but I expect my students to put in the work necessary to succeed. I will be honest with you when something is not correct, but not in a way that will make you feel bad about it. I enjoy it when my students enjoy learning about music in a way that they will leave the lesson learning something new, and being excited about practicing their new skill. I will customize each lesson to my student's needs and ability, so they will be on their own track.
I have experience working with students of all ages but I am an expert at working with students in the middle school to high school age. I understand not only what it takes to become a great musician but also great performer. The most important thing is that my students enjoy getting their lessons, and show improvement when they practice those skills. What sets me apart from other instructors is that I won't expect you to be perfect the first time you play things I'll work with you to make sure that you're doing things the right way and that you're also enjoying them. Rock stars are not built in one night!
