Cullen Joel Horne
Education: I have 5 years of university training in music performance and education, and 5 years of private conservatory study in drums including various private lessons with professionals such as Dom Famularo and Ron Thaler.
Teaching: I have 34 years of experience in individual and group instruction, with both children and adults from beginner through advanced. In 1998, I started teaching 50-55 private students each week at Brent’s Music Headquarters in Lee County, FL, and other locations including Florida public school classes, my personal studio, university clinics, The Jennifer Craig Memorial music camp and my annual drum-fest. I use many of today’s popular drum books as well as the books I have written for my “Complete Drum Set Training System.” I have also taught at SoundWorks music stores in Horseheads, New York. I am currently teaching at the Hamlin Music Academy and Schmitt Music store in Duluth, MN, as well as online lessons via Lessonface.
Performance: 34 years of professional work in all styles: Rock, Jazz, Top 40 popular, Rap, Country, R&B, Funk, Latin, Gospel and symphonic. I have performed across the United States (L.A. to New York) and Europe (Iceland, Scotland, England, Belgium and Holland). I have played with nightclub acts, dinner theater shows, local symphonies, gospel music ministries, and in my own annually held Drum Fest, as well as independent gigs in my local area.
Consultant: For over 30 years, I have been helping local churches and public schools choose the right equipment for their musical setting. Many ministers and band directors have been relying on my years of varied band experience to pick out their drum-related equipment.
Publication: I am currently seeking publication for the first in a series of progressive study books for drum set called 8th Note Grooves for Drum Set; I am presently writing volume two of that series, as well as another educational book titled “The Complete Drum Set Training System”.
Endorsements: I have educator/performer endorsements with 3 major equipment manufacturers: Sabian Cymbals (Northwest region), Aquarian Drumheads, and Vic Firth Drumsticks.

My teaching is rooted in proper technique. All drummers need the same essential tools to become proficient artists, but how to use those tools in performance settings is your own choice. If you have the technique needed to perform all styles of music, then you will be successful in whichever musical path you choose. I prefer this technique-based method to studying specific styles of music, which only prepares the student to play that one style. There is an established order to the techniques that I teach--there is nothing worse than trying to learn a technique that is too difficult to accomplish because it was presented too soon in the student's development.
My system of instruction takes you through all the steps, in the right order, to build strong technique. You will also learn to read music and balance your body so that your weak side becomes stronger. I will teach you proper practice habits as well. As an added bonus, I will teach you the secrets that the big-name pros use on a regular basis, techniques that I learned in person from great drummers such as Dom Famularo, David Garibaldi, Dave Weckl, Ron Thaler, Terry Bozzio, Billy Cobham, etc.
These secrets and techniques are not just for the working professional. They are for the everyday drummer who just wants to know more and to play better.
Remember: the more you accomplish, the more fun you'll have.
While teaching drums is serious business for me, it is also something that I genuinely love to do. I am fun, humorous and lighthearted in my lessons, and I look at every student as an indivdual budding artist.
My pricing is lower than most online teachers for a reason. It is NOT because my teaching is worth less--quite the contrary. I offer lower pricing to beginner students so that they don't have to bite such a large economic bullet before they've figured out if learning drums is really what they want to do.
