Gary Seligson is a first call free-lance drummer and percussionist based in NYC. For over twenty years, he has worked primarily with Broadway shows. Currently he is playing percussion and drums for MOTOWN The Musical. He was also the original drummer on Broadway and subsequently created the drumbooks for WICKED, BILLY ELLIOT, TARZAN, AIDA and Gershwin's FASCINATING RHYTHM. You can hear Gary on the original cast recordings of MOTOWN (2013 GRAMMY nominatred) , TARZAN, WICKED (2003 Grammy Award recording and Multi-Platinum sales), and AIDA (2000 Grammy Award). Through the years he has played for more than 30 Broadway shows including BOOK OF MORMON, THE LION KING, MAMA MIA, SPRING AWAKENING, LITTLE MERMAID, SPAMALOT, RENT, CHICAGO, MISS SAIGON, LES MISERABLES, DREAMGIRLS, CATS and others. He has recorded and performed with a wide range of artists including: Elton John, Phil Collins, Cirque Du Soleil, Leann Rimes, Phoebe Snow, Paul Williams, Rupert Holmes, The Rascals, Ben Vereen, Heather Headley, Toni Braxton, Joel Grey, Billy Porter, Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel, TV show SMASH, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
He is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford where he studied percussion with Alexander Lepak. He has also studied extensively with studio drummer Gary Chester, as well as world class jazz drummers Joe Morello, Bob Moses, Ed Soph, and Ed Blackwell. He is an endorser for Pearl Drums and Percussion, Sabian cymbals, Remo drumheads and ProMark drumsticks.
My teaching style is completely specific to the needs and desires of my students. Because I have extensive knowledge and experience in a wide variety of musical styles Jazz, Funk, Rock, Big Band, Latin, Broadway, Percussion etc. I am able to guide and build a strong foundation in many styles. If a beginner wants to learn their favorite song, I am happy to help them learn how to play it. If a more advanced student wants to work on something particular I can help them to attain their goals.
