About

John Gray was born in 1987 in Phoenix, Arizona. He started playing music when he was seven years old, learning classical guitar, and taking up bass not soon after. John used all the knowledge he gained at a young age to become one of Phoenix's best young musicians. He was in demand for all kinds of gigs: from playing jazz in restaurants and coffee shops, to playing in pits for musicals, to gigs with rock bands and playing in churches. John also began to compose, being influenced by Duke Ellington and Igor Stravinsky, including songs for jazz band and electronic music. John moved to New York City to attend Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Jeremy Manasia, Garry Dial, and Jay Anderson. John learned much about composition from Richard Sussman, and refined his writing technique and style. He received his Bachelor's Degree in 2009. After school, John moved to Brooklyn, and started playing shows in New York's rock and singer-songwriter scene in addition to jazz gigs. John also started his own music group. The band has played in several of New York's best venues, including Spike Hill, The National Underground, and Cafe Vivaldi. In 2010, John released his first self-titled album on Fervor Records. It is available now on iTunes, and have followed that up with 2012's "Black Pants, Black Shirt, Grappler Gun", also available on iTunes. John has been teaching music in NYC since 2011. John is very experienced when it comes to playing all kinds of music and looks forward to developing custom lesson plans with each student to help them find what they are looking for in music. John loves to help each student develop their skills and become great musicians!

I enjoy working with each student to to help them find what they are looking for in music. I like to focus on fundamentals, and depending on whether the student is an upright or electric bassist, there are several different books to work out of, in addition to curriculum I have developed myself. Music is supposed to be enjoyable, so I try to work with each student to find songs they like and help them learn it, instead of just having a set method I use for every student.
