Critically acclaimed concert violinist, recording artist, composer, and author, Peter Ferreira (born: Pedro Ferreira) has been a very active violinist since the age of 6, inspired by his grandfather, who was also a violinist. He entered the Conservatorio De Musica in Coimbra, Portugal, where he studied with teacher Dario Peixoto.
He is described in Comunidades USA Magazine as one of the most celebrated Portuguese-born violinists of the modern era. Since at a very young age, Peter spent his formative years training as a classical musician, surrounded by many of the violin masters of the ages. From J.S. Bach to Piazzolla, Peter's seasoned golden tone performances have an abundance of hot Mediterranean influence, sure to captivate the audience!
Although classically trained, Peter is equally comfortable performing classical music as well as rock, jazz, tango, or world music. He is a rare musician who defies definition, a kind of universal musician so rarely encountered in our time.
Peter's crossover performances include music from classical masterpieces to pop, rock, jazz, world music, and Latin repertoire to name a few and has opted to "fuse" the new and the old together. He is highly regarded as a virtuoso soloist on a symphonic stage, but equally as comfortable in front of an audience with his band behind him.
He has received various awards during his years in high school and college while studying with great violinists as Mara Milkis, Erick Friedman, James Graseck, and Isaac Stern. He has also participated in master classes with Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman.
As a soloist, Peter has been repeatedly praised for the beauty of his tone, the depth and flair of his musicianship, and his rare balance of virtuosity and sensitivity. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras and ensembles in the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. He founded the Dresden String Quartet in 1998, and performed as its first violinist through 2002.
In April 2006, Peter and Paulo Soares arranged and recorded various pieces of traditional Portuguese Coimbra Fado Music in his hometown of Coimbra. Marking a new era in this genre of music has never done before.
In 2007, Peter published his first book, The Violin Companion.
In 2008, he traveled to his hometown, Coimbra, per invitation of the University and Town of Coimbra, where he performed a live concert at the famous Jardim da Sereia with his friend and guitarist Paulo Soares (Port. guitar). Later that year, Peter commissioned composer Don Nardo to compose a double concerto for violin, guitar, and orchestra, introducing the Portuguese Guitar into a pure classical setting for the first time.
In May 2009, he published his second edition of The Violin Companion, now available online on Amazon and at other book retailers. He also announced his third book called The Violinist, An Inside View of the Real Music World, and a new scale book for the young violinist.
Finally, he is an active freelancer musician and composer. In 2003, one of his personal compositions was featured in a video documentary about the underwater exploration of the German U853 submarine, which sank off the Rhode Island coast during WWII. As an independent artist, Peter teaches privately, lectures, and conducts master classes at different schools and his private studios. He has also recorded four CD albums, two of them in his own studio and now under his own independent record label, Sonus Records.
Some of Peter's recordings include:
- Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) - Antonio Vivaldi
- Sonata No. 5, Opus 24 "Spring Sonatas" - L. Van Beethoven
- A collection of traditional pieces and works by Portuguese composers
- Mozart Violin Sonatas
- Various Encore pieces including works by Massenet, Tchaikovsky, Bach, DeFalla, P. Sarasate, Granados, Astor Piazzolla, and much more.
- Selected works from the J. S. Bach Sonatas and Partitas
- Wild Flower - crossover CD with selected works from the classical to the pop & rock repertoire
In addition, he has been equally in demand as a soloist and recording artist. During the next season, Peter will continue to expand his presence on the concert stage with a series of important orchestral debuts and recital tours with his band and other music venues. He is also a published author and columnist for Mundo Portugues and Comunidades-USA Magazines. His books are available online on Amazon and at major book retailers.
