Roman Ponomariov holds his Masters Degree from Rice University where he studied with William VerMeulen on a full scholarship.  Prior to going to the U.S., Roman received his Bachelor of Music (honours) from the University of Melbourne under the tutelage of Geoff Collinson and Barry Tuckwell.

Roman has won numerous competitions and awards, including the Barry Tuckwell Brass Prize at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass, First Prize at the Fremantle Concerto Competition, and Woodside Concerto Competition. He was a finalist in the ABC Young Performers Awards. Roman is also a recipient of many awards and scholarships from Melbourne University, the University of Western Australia, and Rice University.

Roman has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and recorded a solo recital for the ABC Classic FM. His other solo appearances include concerto performances with Stonington Symphony Orchestra, Zelman Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne University Orchestra, and Western Australian Youth Orchestra.

As an orchestral player, Roman has performed as guest Principal Horn with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a guest performer with Sydney Symphony and has held the position of acting Principal 3rd Horn with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Roman is a two-time participant of the Pacific Music Festival in Japan where he performed and toured with the PMF Orchestra, and played in chamber music concerts with Principal members of the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and major U.S. orchestras.

Based in Melbourne in Australia, Roman is passionate about teaching and sharing his musical knowledge with aspiring horn players. He has taught the French horn for several years and tutored players of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Malaysian Youth Orchestra, and the Australian Youth Orchestra.
