Book a Lesson with Shawn Leonard
Shawn Leonard grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Music has always been a part of his life, from his childhood years listening to his folks' Beatles albums to his adult years teaching and performing behind the drum set. Most of his early training was informal. A family friend and talented bass player, Jay Andriot, taught him about song form, how to play to the tune, and the value of developing your ears. After playing with a few bands around the D.C. area, Shawn moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music where he graduated with honors. There he was introduced to many different styles of music as well as a more disciplined approach to studying the drums. While in Boston, Shawn performed and recorded with Element 54, Vintage Radio, and Stefan Couture and the Campfire Orchestra. He also played in the backing bands of some talented songwriters such as Mark Renburke, Laura Imhoff, and Max G. Shawn has returned to the D.C. area and performs regularly with his band The NRIs, as well as a few other projects where he explores the creativity of being a musician.
I have been teaching private lessons for 12 years, and I have had the pleasure of working with students of all skill levels, from absolute beginners to music majors at Northern Virginia Community College. Along with teaching private lessons, I have also taught group drum lessons as well as ensemble classes.
My lessons focus on developing your understanding of rhythms and grooves while building your drum set vocabulary. We will apply these skills to songs and talk about song form, phrasing, and fills. I can also help you with complex coordination concepts as well as more advanced techniques like polyrhythms and linear grooves. My approach is to develop exercises that are specifically designed to work on each student’s needs.
My goal is to make you better today than you were yesterday.
