Bobby A is a professional drummer and educator that resides in New York.

He has been playing drums for over 30 years and has been teaching students of all ages and levels for 10 years.

Playing professionally since the age of 14, he has gained experience working in all types of bands including rock bands, jazz ensembles, cover bands, and Top 40 bands . He toured extensively with the indie rock band SoSoHuman, and Wind Up Records recording artist Seven Wiser. Currently, he performs regularly with The Accents, a premier event/party dance band that is in it's 62nd year of continuous operation.

Currently, Bobby is studying with internationally recognized drummers/educators Dom Famularo and Carl Allen. Remaining a student has aided in Bobby's ability to be an effective teacher.

Bobby is a member of the Sabian Education Network, an international group of drumming educators that promote and support the future of drumming through a collective of ideas and discussions that benefit students and the drum industry as a whole. He was selected by the network as "Featured Drum Teacher" in January 2020.

In addition to his teaching, Bobby produces a YouTube series on his channel called the Rudi-Minute with Bobby A , which is a short video lesson demonstrating a drum rudiment and some of it's applications on a drum kit.

He also writes a monthly educational/motivational blog/newsletter called Bobby's Beat!! In it, he features tips for success, exercises, and historical information associated with the art of drumming.

My teaching philosophy is simple:
~ I'm dedicated the highest quality of drumming education by sharing, motivating, and inspiring in every lesson ~

  • I teach what I've learned from my experience as a drummer of over 30 years.
  • I mentor each student and craft a personalized approached based on their individual needs and how they can achieve their drumming goals.
  • I connect with students by encouraging them, supporting them, and holding them accountable for what they wish to achieve during their time with me.
  • I create a positive and fun atmosphere for our lessons.
  • I teach how to be a musical drummer.
  • I emphasize traditional methods and concepts such as theory, technique, musical history, and musical styles.
  • I believe in the idea the one must learn to crawl before learning how to walk. Step by step with sure footing is the best way to learn the drums.
  • I believe the student will go as far as they wish as long as they work diligently and follow my guidance. I will not show the student how to play the drums, but I will guide them on how they can show themselves.
  • I emphasize the concept of Endless Potential.

My personal commitment and promise to my students:

  • I will be a positive roll model to each student. I will be a mentor. I will teach them the fundamentals of drumming and cultivate a strong foundation of skills and knowledge needed to be successful on this instrument. I will demand effort, energy, and excellence from each student. I will hold them accountable for their performance. I will not tolerate laziness or negativity. I will push the student to have desire to achieve the unlimited potential within them. I will be supportive, attentive, and engaging. I will strive to have fun during each lesson.

My personal request to students/parents:

  • Students must do the work themselves in order become the drummer’s they wish to be. This means REASONABLE REGULAR PRACTICE.
*I ask that parents please stay engaged with your child’s drumming routine and please support and encourage them by checking in with their progress.

My teaching method centers around 4 key fundamentals to building a solid drumming foundation. They are: Rudiments, Reading, Musical Styles/Genres, and 4-Way Coordination. It's my belief and personal experience, as a professional drummer and teacher, that strong knowledge and skill in these areas will allow the student to (eventually) obtain a high level of expressive freedom on the drum set. In other words, mastering these essential drumming techniques will facilitate the student's ability to perform whatever they please. (I.E. songs, solos, long periods of playing, teaching.)

Some of the drumming texts I use and highly recommend that my students own are:

1. Stick Control by George L. Stone

2. Progressive Steps To Syncopation For The Modern Drummer by Ted Reed

3. Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin

4. Groove Essentials 1.0 by Tommy Igoe

5. It's Your Move by Dom Famularo

6. The N.A.R.D Book

7. Survival Guide For The Modern Drummer by Jim Riley
