About

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and audio professional with a Bachelor of Music Technology from the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia (2017). I play guitar, bass, and piano, with a background spanning pop, rock, jazz, and metal.

I have over 10 years of teaching experience across Australia and New Zealand, including music tutoring at West End State School and the Australian Academy of Music in Brisbane from 2017 to 2020, and running my own private practice, Alexander Ross Music, since 2017.

Professionally, I work in music production and game audio. I am currently the Sound Designer and Composer for Shattered Realms at Spellbound Studios, and I have produced singles for progressive metal artist ALISTER including Awakening, Maia, Atria, and Peripheral, alongside production work for other independent artists and bands.

Having come to production as a musician myself, I understand the gap between playing music and recording it well. That crossover is where I do my best teaching.

I work with beginner to advanced students online, covering audio production, recording and tracking, mixing and mastering, sound design, and DAW workflow. The first lesson is free so we can talk through your goals before committing to anything.

Teaching Style

My lessons are practical and goal-oriented. Rather than working through a fixed curriculum, we build sessions around what you are actually making. If you have a track in progress, that becomes the material. If you are starting from scratch, we focus on the fundamentals that will unblock you fastest.

I find students learn best when the work feels real, so I try to get you into your DAW and making decisions from the first lesson. Concepts get introduced when they become relevant to what you are doing, not before.

I am comfortable teaching across multiple DAWs and can work with whatever you are already using.

Curriculum

I teach primarily in Reaper, which I recommend for its flexibility and low cost, but I can work with students using Logic Pro, Ableton, or other DAWs. For online lessons I use a screen sharing setup that lets you stream your audio in real time, so there is no compromise on feedback quality.

There are no required texts. I point students toward specific resources as they become relevant, including free documentation, YouTube references, and project templates I have built myself.
