About

Hello! My name is Amy Selkirk and I am an accomplished musician and music teacher, with more than ten years of experience teaching private lessons. My primary instrument is the oboe, which I first started playing in fifth grade band. I went to school through a doctorate in oboe performance, and I currently live in Mobile, Alabama where I have an exciting career as a professional oboe player! I frequently perform with many symphony orchestras throughout the Gulf Coast, including the Panama City Symphony Orchestra (FL), Pensacola Symphony Orchestra (FL), Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL), Mobile Symphony (AL), Meridian Symphony (MS), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony. I am also a faculty member at the University of South Alabama where I teach applied oboe lessons, woodwind chamber music, and music appreciation classes. Additionally, I currently teach private oboe lessons to several high school students throughout Mobile and the surrounding area. I have experience teaching private lessons to students in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and beyond. I also love to teach adult beginners.

I have also been playing the piano since I was 8 years old! I took 10 years of lessons when I was younger, and that is what first led me to fall in love with music. I have experience as a choral accompanist, and experience accompanying college students on solo and chamber recitals and juries. For the past several years my priority has been the oboe, but lately I am starting to make piano practice a part of my daily routine again. I am finding great joy in making music on an instrument that does not require me to make my own reeds or worry about spit getting stuck under certain keys (oboe problems- if you know, you know....). I love teaching piano lessons to beginners!

I love teaching oboists of all ages and abilities, and have a very patient and encouraging approach to private lessons. I want all of my students to reach their maximum potential, and therefore hold my students to high expectations. My students should plan to practice at least 6 days a week and come to all lessons prepared. I tend to be very detailed and thorough while working on solo repertoire with my students, and place a high level of focus on musicality.
