About

Andreas Grosskopf is a saxophonist, composer, sax-teacher and author of several method-books

and his own blog. He sees himself as a kind of funnel where you put in all kinds of influences and

musical styles and out of his saxophone’s bell comes his music: Jazz, Funk and Rock spiced with

Worldmusic and ambient sounds.

In fact this stylistic description of Grosskopf’s work is too narrow if you look at his diverse projects

and the compositions of the last years. The juries, awarding him the “Leipzig Jazz-Award 1999”,

the “Art-Award of the City of Friedrichshafen 2002” and the scholarship for the “Skidmore Jazz

Institute New York”, did so because of the huge stylistic diversity in playing and composing.

His projects include musicians by the likes of percussionist Hakim Ludin, New York-based singer

Miles Griffith, singer Lois from Vienna / Austria, DJ Raphneck from Leipzig and tabla-player Mostofa

Jahangir from Bangladesh among others.

After attending the “Academy of Contemporary Music“ in Zurich / Switzerland, where Andreas

Grosskopf learned the basics in jazz-improvisation, he went to the college of music in Leipzig /

Germany with a short stop at the “Skidmore Jazz Institute” in 1995.

Up to now he travelled Germany, France, India, Nepal and Japan to play his music.

Since more than 20 years Andreas Grosskopf is also a teacher for saxophone, flute and

improvisation. He also conducts workshops, online-webinars and runs his own blog about playing,

improvising and practising at sax-workout.com.

Grosskopf was invited to speak at music colleges and music-fairs. These experiences lead to writing

his method books “Groove Horns”, “Sax-Workout” and the instructional video and method-book

“7Steps”.

“Groove Horns” is about rhythmical aspects for horn-players, “Sax.workout” deals with the art of

practising and playing a windinstrument and “7Steps” is about improvising. All method books are in

German and English.

The most important thing for Grosskopf, when it comes to teaching and learning and instrument, is

the joy of music, having fun in doing what you do.

Asked what music means to him, he says: “freedom, energy and the joy of life!” these are the

principles being important for Grosskopf.

In 2002 Andreas Grosskopf found his own label (type:g)records to produce his music and to have

the freedom to do whatever he wants to do! In the meantime about 60 songs were released by

(type:g)records.

“Music is the kerosene for my engine!” so Grosskopf says.

I'm teaching saxophone, music theory and improvisation more than 20 years.  The lessons I offer range from one-to-one lessons to workshops. Plus I published method books and and instructional video on improvisation, rhythm workout, etc. My main focus, especially in music theory lies on practical methods, how to use all this theory on the instrument, giving the student exercises and tipps on how to make the theory sound!

I'm also regularly blogging about musical aspects, playing a wind-instrument and music in general.

I gained experiences in teaching German at a primary school where I teach German as a second language for children coming to Germany not speaking a single word. I teach children in classes of about 8 students since two years.
