Anne Scharer has  been playing horn in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since the 1997-1998 season. She was appointed to second horn in 2016. Previously she played third horn for thirteen seasons and fourth horn for six seasons. Anne was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and went on to study music at Indiana University and The Juilliard School. Her first professional orchestral position was in Oviedo, Spain as co-principal horn. In 1994 she returned to the United States and played associate principal/third horn with the Columbus Symphony for three years before winning her job at the Met. In addition to her 23 years with the Opera, she performs with Classical Tahoe, Monarch Brass, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, teaches horn at Interlochen Center for the Arts and records for commercial and movie soundtracks.

I believe in an overall positive approach to teaching and encourage the students to be their own best teachers.  I enjoy teaching all ages and abilities from college professionals to middle school students.

College and  Professionals:

I love coaching for auditions, be it  orchestral/opera orchestra auditions or auditions for college.  I can help you get organized with your practice and develop a plan for helping you play your best.  In addition to coaching the repertoire, I can teach the Carmine Caruso method to help with strength and agility throughout the range of the horn. I also delve into mental toughness training, and. tap into the power of the mind through visualization and positive thought.

High school and middle school students:

I teach at Interlochen Arts Camp and absolutely enjoy teaching high school and middle school students.  I am always impressed on how quickly my young students improve on the Horn.  In addition to learning the beautiful horn repertoire suited to their ability, I can help with the fundamentals of horn playing  using the Caruso Method to help them improve their strength and agility.
