I am an English teacher with more than 14 years of classroom teaching experience. For the past 12 years I have taught 7th and 8th grade English. I am a graduate of Elon University and hold a masters degree in literature from Salisbury University. I taught freshman literature and composition at Salisbury while earning my graduate degree. In addition to teaching middle school students, I have also tutored students ranging in age from 10-18. My years of experience also include teach reading, writing and grammar usage. I love helping students better understand literature and improve their writing. I have a deep love of literary classics and poetry. My favorite writers and poets to teach include Shakespeare, Harper Lee, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath and Edgar Allan Poe.
How I teach largely depends on the student I am teaching. I strongly believe that one approach does not suit all learners and that teachers must be willing to adapt their instruction in order to meet the learning style of the student. I also believe productive written feedback and one-on-one conferencing time are essential to helping students become better readers and writers.
I have a real passion for teaching literature. The study of rich literary texts should be fun as well as informative. I suppose you could say I'm a literature geek. I encourage my students to consider works of literature from a variety of different points of view and interpretations. I enjoy helping them navigate the oftentimes dense and confusing language in order to better understand the text. I believe learning should be fun. Great works of literature are great in part because they entertain us and make us think more deeply about ourselves and the world around us. This is what makes great writing timeless. I love helping students discover and appreciate classic works of literature.
