About

Hello! I am Brianna Zrinsky (aka 'Prof. Z'), and I am the Director of Bands at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. I earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music (Wheaton, IL, USA) and a Master of Music in Music Education degree at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music (Evanston, IL, USA). I've taught a wide variety of ages in schools throughout the U.S.A. and Taiwan.

My primary instrument is the flute. I have experience playing in concert band, pit orchestra, flute choirs, worship teams, and chamber ensembles. I have taught a wide variety of wind, brass, and percussion instruments in private lessons for over 15 years. I'm passionate about music theory/history, supporting international students, conducting, and mentoring student leaders.

I was the featured flute soloist with the Colorado School of Mines Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2025. You can see the entire concert here! https://www.youtube.com/live/ODt32PXLYL4?si=ZYvMziiu6q1vm7Ia

Teaching Style

I work to improve a student's tone and technique while also bringing an awareness of the historical and musical context of repertoire. Instrumental lessons start with warm-ups that I will also play with you so that you can train your ear to get an ideal sound. If a student is a beginner, we will work through an instrumental method book (i.e. Standard of Excellence, Rubank, etc.) and also focus on an outside solo or small ensemble piece. If a student is an intermediate player, we will focus on technical exercises in various keys, sight-reading skills, and solo/small ensemble pieces.

I expect my students to practice regularly and take ownership for their music education. You will have a musical "assignment" at the end of each lesson. I am here as a support and guide as you go on your musical journey!

Curriculum

If a student is a beginner, we will work through an instrumental method book (i.e. Standard of Excellence, Rubank, etc.) and also focus on an outside solo or small ensemble piece. If a student is an intermediate player, we will focus on technical exercises in various keys, sight-reading skills, and solo/small ensemble pieces.

We can also work on music you are preparing music for school, the community, a recital, church, etc.
