Calvin has been based in Madrid, Spain and working as a professional guitarist for more than 25 years. He has performed at some of the most prestigious theatres in the U.S. as well as internationally including RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and LINCOLN CENTER in New York City, TEATRO NACIONAL in Mexico City and TEATRO MADRID in Spain where his performances have enjoyed enthusiastic critical acclaim (NEW YORK TIMES, VILLAGE VOICE, etc.). He has worked as musical director and composer for numerous companies including Suite Espanola, Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo and Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco. He is a regular performer and instructor for Festival Flamenco, Albuquerque. Calvin worked as composer and co-producer on“El Pintor”, in Madrid, Spain and “Ni Mucho Ni Poco” in N.M. In 2014 , he was asked to collaborate with Spanish pop icon PABLO ALBORAN on the recording of “Terral”, the 5 time platinum selling record which enjoyed 11 straight weeks as Spain’s number 1 selling record and was nominated for a grammy. Most recently he was working as guest artist instructor and composer/arranger in the Theatre and Dance Department at the University of New Mexico.
Calvin has been teaching private lessons for more than 20 years. He teaches guitarists of all levels and all ages, with students who are completely new to the guitar, as well as full time professional performers. His enthusiasm for teaching is evident in every class, as he encourages students with positive feedback and diligent attention. He adapts classes and material specifically to each student, depending on their specific interests and particular needs.
Calvin specializes in Flamenco Guitar and also has broad experience with other finger picking styles, such as Classical Guitar, Latin, Brazilian, Bossa, Folk, Acoustic Rock, etc.. For students looking to focus on Flamenco specifically, he has a personally developed didactic method, which combines a highly effective technique base with dynamic and fun musical applications in the various Flamenco forms. For those students looking to branch out in their playing and adopt some new mechanisms, rhythmic patterns or new abilities, Calvin has a wide variety of skills to share with guitarists in order to help them broaden their horizons. Whether a complete beginner looking to develop a strong foundation in technical and musical ability, or a long time player looking to further develop your skills, Calvin is the right teacher!
