Chris Detrick

I have a BA in music from UC Berkeley and a certificate in fusion guitar studies from Berklee College of Music. I have been teaching private guitar lessons for over twenty years and am in my 11th year as director of the music program at a prestigious independent school in the Bay Area. I have experience teaching students from ages 8 to 80 in the classroom and in one-on-one settings.

As a guitar teacher, I am an expert in fretboard logic and can quickly develop your skills as an improviser and soloist. As a theory teacher, I can help you understand the Western tonal system, and study for AP music theory exams and all university-level music theory classes. As a musicianship teacher, I can supercharge your practice routine, sharpen your skills, and to play in your band or ensemble with more musical impact and power.

My goal is to help you become your own best teacher by providing detailed and relevant information that can keep you actively practicing and building your skills. My approach is to help you develop a reliable, fun, and malleable practice routine that fits your schedule and helps you methodically reach your goals. A single hour-long lesson is packed with enough information to keep you practicing for over a month. Each lesson is supplemented with notes so that all of the information is accurately captured.
