Christen Blair Horne
About
Due to her dynamic singing and dramatically infused performances, young American soprano Christen Blair Horne has been making a name for herself on both the operatic and concert stage.
On and off the stage, Christen leads by example. She sees herself as a student of life; she is always learning. In the past three years, she not only she earned her Masters in Opera Performance (with Honors) from the University of Kansas, she learned that she genuinely loves teaching. She has been working tirelessly to expand what she has to offer students and while she has been teaching singing (any style) for over 5 years, she now also offers beginning piano and coaches acting for singers and cosplayers.
She has also learned to embrace the diversity of the music she loves. While she has focused on opera for the past 10 years, she has an incredible passion for musical theatre, movie scores, video games scores, and soundtracks in general (like the musics for Avatar the Last Airbender and anime shows like Full Metal Alchemist). In her newest adventure, Christen is auditioning not only for local operas and musicals, she is auditioning for session work so that she can be a part of the video game and movie music that she loves so much.
Teaching Style
Christen teaches classical technique and specializes in classical, musical theatre, and contemporary styles. She truly believes that one can apply classical technique to any style they want to sing, and be able to sing it healthily for years to come. That doesn't mean you have to sound like an opera singer first! Christen is always exploring new ways to help get her students where they want to go healthily and efficiently.
Christen is passionate about helping students discover their voice and just what they are capable of. She is particularly passionate about teaching students who have been told they “can’t sing.” She truly believes that everyone can sing, it just takes dedication, time, and practice.
She also loves teaching beginning piano students. She knows first hand how daunting piano can be, and endeavors to break it down, help the instrument become more approachable, and help students learn music they *love* to play.
In addition to music lessons, Christen has discovered a new love for coaching acting and drama. One of her favorite processes is to dig into characters when she's learning a role, and after assisting directors more and more, she is thrilled to offer in-depth, one-on-one sessions to help students dig into and learn how to, not just "get into character," but to become their character. To learn how to feel, to be their character. With Christen's approach, improv becomes natural instinct and reaction, not something you have to worry about. How awesome is that?
She truly hopes, and believes, that she can be of service, and she looks forward to hearing from you.
Curriculum
Curriculum for voice and acting students vary depending on the material the student wants to work on.
For piano, Christen uses the Faber Piano Adventures because they're inexpensive, effective, and offer a wide variety of music so that the student can play the music they want to play.
