About

I started teaching myself guitar when I was 10.  Later, in high-school, my teacher, frustrated with my lack of practicing, came up with an idea to light a fire under me. They suggested I teach a younger classmate. Not only did I finally start practicing, but I fell in love with teaching as well. Thanks to that, I have played over 1,000 shows, both solo and as an auxiliary musician for other touring acts. I performed on over 30 albums and have composed for radio, television, and internet video series, including sharing the stage with members of the 10,000 Maniacs. I've been featured in The New York Times, on the CBS Evening News, and on NPR.

I have over 6 years of experience teaching private lessons in addition to teaching seminars on songwriting and music business at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts and SUNY JCC.

Teaching Style

No single learning path works for all students, it’s about finding and reinforcing your strengths, and empowering you to solve your own problems. As my old cello teacher used to say, “I’m not teaching you how to play the cello, I’m teaching you how to teach yourself how to play the cello.” Providing students with the tools and guidance they need to practice and improve: that’s what I strive to do.

I work closely with students to help them develop their own unique pace, methods, and goals individual to their needs. We’ll work together to not just master their craft, but also find their voice and enjoyment with their instrument.

Curriculum

While there is no "One-size-fits-all" for all students, I start most students off with Essential Elements or Suzuki. As they progress I try to include pieces they like, pop songs, and different genres. The variety helps them stay engaged, learn a bit about different styles to broaden their knowledge, but also, have fun. As they get intermediate levels the paths diverge. Some of my students are doing Jazz improvisation, some of them, composition, and others are getting ready to audition for college. Whatever the path, enjoyment is important. How music fits into their lives is personal and specific to them. No matter what, I think it should be fun, be a path to self-discovery, and enhance their lives.
