About
Hi there! Thanks for browsing! I can't wait to be selected as the next facilitator of your learning journey! I am an education veteran with 10 years of experience in teaching and learning. I spent the last five years of my career teaching elementary school (grades 1, 2, and 3) in the state of Maryland. I am passionate about education and enrichment in the early years of development. Currently, I am a stay at home mother and I am teaching my 2 year old French. I enjoy being active, cooking with my family, and teaching literacy. I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Your Future Lessonface Instructor
Teaching Style
I have spent the last 10 years in the field of education; the first 5 as a nonprofit education Program Director and the next 5 as an Elementary School teacher. As the Program Director I implemented specific, arts, community service, and academically-centered programming for students and families. A few programs that I oversaw were a Nutrition Education program in partnership with Wholefoods Market, culminating in a student-run pop up restaurant; a 6-week, Community Service Summer Learning Program designed to develop students ages 5 through 16 and their understanding of service in Baltimore City; and a semester-long service-learning project in partnership with Loyola University.
Further, I was charged with writing and managing program policy, overseeing the recruitment and hiring of program participants and support staff, creating a liability process for our programming as well as our partners, and liaising with viable partners and funding sources. I designed and implemented training for volunteers, employees, interns, and Youth Workers. I managed information, tracking, data analysis, and implementation of programmatic initiatives aimed at meeting target academic milestones for a 3-year, $300,000 21st Century Community Learning Center grant sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education. I have experience using both qualitative and quantitative data to design effective assessment tools for the evaluation of program quality.
I have also worked with partners in the coordination of community literacy spaces as a SummerREADS Coordinator with MOST (Maryland Out of School Time Network) in the establishment of six Weinberg Community Libraries in partnership with Baltimore City Schools to create literacy-rich spaces for Baltimore City students during the summer. I oversaw and coordinated community partners, provided training and technical support to Summer Facilitators in combining literacy and STEM/STEAM to implement lessons in the library spaces, and conducted family engagement events in support of students to prevent academic decline known as the “summer slide”.
I am a former educator with 5 years of classroom experience teaching 1st through 3rd graders. I am proficient in teaching balanced literacy approaches and am well-versed in reading strategies to include guided reading, close reading, and guided writing.
Curriculum
I use a variety of teaching methods to meet the needs of my students. I am very comfortable with direct instruction as a former classroom teacher, however I am also comfortable implementing technology into lessons in order to differentiate based on the needs and ability levels of students. I use an out-of-the-box approach to project and inquiry-based learning. I attribute this to my first introduction to education being outside of the school system. As a director in a nonprofit, I didn't have the same constraints that teachers have to stay within the confines of a specific curriculum.
