Daniel Ramjattan

Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar

About

Daniel Ramjattan is rapidly emerging as an ambassador for the classical guitar in Canada, having premiered dozens of solo and chamber works for guitar. He has given recitals in Vienna, Austria, Italy, and various locations across Canada, the United States, and Japan, and has received an array of top prizes in provincial and national solo guitar competitions, as well as placing as a finalist in the Hamilton and Montreal International Guitar Competitions.

His debut studio album, "Inspirations: New Works for Solo Guitar", features his interpretation of six new works by Canadian guitar composers, including three world premiere recordings, and is available on all streaming platforms as well as in physical copies. It was featured as Record of the Week CBC Radio's "In Concert on Demand with Paolo Pietropaolo" in March 2022. WholeNote Magazine also described his playing as "beautiful and clean".

Daniel's past teachers include Jeffrey McFadden, Patrick Roux, and Bruce Holzman, and he has taken extensive lessons with Denis Azabagic and Lorenzo Micheli as well. He has performed in masterclass for some of the greatest classical guitarists in the world, including Judicael Perroy, Fabio Zanon, Sergio Assad, Pavel Steidl, and many others.

Daniel is a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) candidate at the University of Toronto, where he recently completed his dissertation on music performance anxiety, defending it in August 2022. He is active as a performance coach and has given guest lectures on this topic at McGill University, the University of Toronto, Memorial University, Mount Royal University, and others. He is the classical guitar instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University's Faculty of Music, where he will also teach a course on music performance anxiety in Fall 2022. He maintains an active solo and chamber concert schedule.

Daniel's past students have received several first prizes in local competitions, as well as the Ontario Music Festivals Association Provincial guitar competition, and attend Bachelor's and Master's programs in performance across Canada. He is a certified teacher with the Royal Conservatory of Music.

I always tailor lessons to the individual student. I specialize in students of all ages who experience music performance anxiety, and who are preparing for auditions, competitions, exams, and other high-pressure events. I also give performance coaching to those who find themselves returning to music after difficult past experiences or after quitting when young. My youngest students have been as young as 5 and my oldest at in their late 70s, and I've had a great time teaching them all online. There is no reason that anyone with the proper training and thoughtful guidance can't reach a high level of playing.

For my classical students, I strongly emphasize building a solid technical foundation that allows them to play the music they learn with ease and maximum expression. I strongly emphasize ergonomic playing, and create an environment that allows individuals to notice unhelpful thoughts and behaviours during practice which may be sabotaging their practice. I also teach improvisation as a means of accelerating technical development.

Beginners usually start reading music from scratch with the Aaron Shearer's Classic Guitar Technique vol. 1.

Afterwards, we move on to the the Royal Conservatory of Music Guitar Repertoire and Technique books 1-8. I also provide improvisation exercises not found in either of these books.

For those returning to guitar and for intermediate players, I like to work with the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Scott Tennant's Pumping Nylon.

More advanced players can bring in any repertoire they are working on and we can work according to their needs.

All books will be provided in the lesson.
