I've been playing guitar for over 30 years. I attended high school at Baltimore School for the Arts as a music major, where I got to hone my music theory skills and learn the finer points of phrasing and rhythmic placement.
Since then, I have focused on playing mostly in bands, though I also make solo music and with collaborators. Arbouretum, a band I founded in 2002, is known for its solid songcraft and extended improvisational passages that feature intricate psychedelic guitar soloing. I also currently play in a duo with drummer Mike Kuhl which plays experimental improvised music, a duo with fellow guitarist/singer Miles Gannett, and have recently started a long-form folk-rock band called The People's Longband . Other collaborators and projects I've been involved with include Human Bell, Television Hill, The Anomoanon, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Cass McCombs, and Papa M, among others.
I like to give students the tools they'll need to work with that will allow them to become better guitarists, emphasizing scales, modes, phrasing, and techniques that help add expressive character to their playing. In addition to this, I like to help students understand better how chords and melody work together so that they can become fluent in different kinds of harmonic situations and develop a broader awareness of diverse musical environments.
