About

My name is Elizabeth McConnell, and I love to learn and teach! I have been an elementary school teacher for five years, and I have have taught kindergarten, first, and fifth grade. I attended Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, where I received my bachelor's degree in elementary education with specialties in Language Arts and Mathematics.  I also obtained my master's degree in educational technology from Central Michigan University, where I graduated with a 4.0. I was a member of a research team at Oakland University that studied the effect of cultural relevance in reading assessments, and presented at the American Educational Research Association in Chicago. I have also been a leader of curriculum and social/emotional problem solving within my school, and created online resources for families to extend their children's learning beyond the classroom.

I have experiences working with a wide range of ages and needs, including kindergarten through fifth grades. I also enjoy working with students who are struggling readers and mathematicians,  as well as students with special needs. I have extensive experience in diagnosing gaps in students reading, writing, science, and math skills, and I work to tailor all of my lessons to the unique needs of each child.

Beyond my experiences as a teacher, I am also a mother to a one-year-old son. I know how special your child is to you, and I hope to be a partner in their success!

I have been described by my students and parents as a warm, calm, and loving teacher. I believe that each child is wonderful and unique in their path towards understanding, and my goal to encourage those "light bulb moments" within my students. I use a variety of engaging and student-centered strategies to tailor each lesson to the needs of my students, and I work to get to know each child individually so that I can motivate them with the things they care about (ie. football, unicorns, music). I try to make our time together fun and relaxed, with an emphasis on growth and positive reinforcement. I truly believe that every child is capable of amazing things, so I have high expectations and celebrate the mistakes that help us grow.
