About

Ella is a clarinetist originally from State College, PA and has her performance degree from the University of Maryland (B.M. in clarinet performance), where she studied with Robert DiLutis of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Though primarily focused on clarinet, she also has a background in piano, which she studied from a young age. She has been teaching private clarinet students for 8 years and has also performed both locally and internationally with a variety of ensembles. In 2015 she toured France and Spain with the SCAHS jazz band playing tenor saxophone and clarinet in several festivals, including the Jazz à Juan Festival in Nice.  As a member of the International Clarinet Association, she played as a guest with the Austrian Clarinet Choir at the 2018 annual ICA conference held in Ostend, Belgium. Ella has played with the Capital City Symphony, and also enjoys performing in pit orchestras. When she is not playing clarinet, Ella works as an organic vegetable farmer and loves to spend as much time as possible in the outdoors. Ella believes there is an important connection between music and nature, and the natural world is often the largest source of inspiration in the creation of her own music.

I have been teaching for about 8 years, and have taught students from beginning to intermediate levels. I adapt my teaching style for each of my students and recognize that there are many reasons why someone may seek out private lessons. It is important to me to make personal connections with my students and have each student set goals for themselves in order to stay engaged and interested.  Goals could be to prepare for a school audition or to simply improve skill level for personal enjoyment.

While every student and every lesson is different, I will always emphasize teaching the fundamentals of the instrument such as technique, air support, embouchure etc. I also believe listening and ear training are important, so I play with/for my students and have them record themselves or listen to music. I like to incorporate basic music theory into my lessons as it relates to what we are learning.
