About

Hi there!  My name is Eric, and I have spent the better part of the last 15 years learning, performing, and teaching the cello. At my peak, I had a studio of nearly 50 cello students through various schools and programs in the NY City area.  I have since moved away and am trying to build an online studio so that I can reach and teach students worldwide!

I did my Bachelor's Degrees in Cello performance (as well as classical composition & theory!) at Boston University, and soon after I earned my Master's and Master's of Musical Arts degrees in Cello performance from Yale University.  Most recently I completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University.

I have a passion for teaching cello and believe that in order to be a successful musician, it is most important to learn with a goal of understanding, rather than just following. My teaching style involves targeted exercises, mixed with technical basics, and performable pieces that will prepare you for any audition or festival you may be participating in. I always strive to make sure that my students understand *why* I am assigning them a particular exercise or scale. I've found that this has created a stronger connection of respect and understanding in lessons, which leads to more passion and improvement!

M.M. in Cello Performance from Yale University
M.M.A. in Cello Performance from Yale University
D.M.A. in Cello Performance from Stony Brook University

I teach flexibly, assigning different methods and strategies to different students based on what I think their biggest areas of opportunity for growth are. Some method books I use include Suzuki, Sevcik, Popper, Klengel, Feuillard, and Schroeder, though the list is much longer and I am also constantly searching for new exercises (and in some cases, writing them if there aren't any I can find!).
