About

I have been teaching since 2006 and run an in-person lesson studio in Charlottesville, VA called Redbird Cello Studio, who purpose is to build a community of cellists who support each other and connect through the shared experience of learning and playing the cello. I teach students aged 5 and up, with my current youngest at 6 and oldest at 78. I teach school-aged students who need help keeping up or catching up in their school programs and have successfully coached many students toward regional and state auditions, scholarship auditions, college auditions and Royal Conservatory of Music exams. I have a wonderful online teaching setup with professional microphone, mulitiple cameras, mobile network backup for WiFi service issues and ideal video lighting. I am currently working through a course from the Royal Conservatory of Music on online teaching. Always a student myself, I work with local music teacher organizations for professional development and idea sharing as well as alternate lessons for personal development in cello, voice and piano. I am experienced personally and professionally with children and adults who are not neurotypical, experience learning difficulties, are differently abled or with those who are working on their mental health and wellbeing at any stage.

I tailor lessons to the individual person. We'll first establish goals and expectations. I will work hard to honor your expectations and help you work toward your goals. We will read music from the beginning and also work a little bit on playing by ear. I use a variety of methods and techniques based on the age, personality and ability of the student.

Choose your own music or let me choose based on what motivates you. Either way, we will grow and learn in every way we need in order to reach our goals. I use Adventures in Cello Country, Suzuki, Solos for Young Cellists, the Royal Conservatory of Music, Essential Elements, ABCs of Cello, I Used to Play Cello and more method books. I use individual repertoire pieces as well from baroque, classical, romantic, 20th centruy and contemporary repertoire. I use Dotzauer, Feuillard, Kummer, Matz, Schroder, Lee etudes and more.  I draw from a variety of methods from cello pedagogues including Leonard Rose, David Popper, Rudolf Matz , Steven Doane and others that have been passed to me from my teachers. I also incorporate some techniques from the Kodaly method and the Suzuki Method.
