About

New to Lessonface but certainly not new to teaching, pianist and singer Eva Gertz is a boundless force of creativity in her music writing, entertainment, and private instruction. She is currently a professor teaching arranging at the esteemed Berklee College of Music, from which she holds a BA in Contemporary Writing and Production and minor in Conducting. Over the last ten years she has worked overseas on cruise ships as a singing pianist, learned over 700 popular songs to perform in dueling piano request shows in New York City, and directed and arranged music for her own band performing her original music. As a singer-songwriter she has performed in many of New York’s hip and trendy venues over the years.  Her debut album, “When I Paint This Town,” not only displays her arranging chops and meaningful reflections on life, but also features her own artwork.

When it comes to teaching, Gertz has had a wide range of expertise informed by the reputable Berklee College of Music, and the diverse city of New York, spanning college-level arranging and composition, kid’s after-school classes in theater, choir, songwriting, and even Brazilian drumming, baby and toddler music development programs, and her favorite, private piano and voice instruction to a wide range of age groups. If you ask anyone who knows Eva personally, teaching has always been a natural inclination of hers. She is a compassionate and nurturing person, enthusiastic to share what she knows with others but at the same time, humbled to grow and learn from others as well. There is much to be said for her ability to meet someone where they are at, and provide that extra push of encouragement.

While remaining true to many traditional aspects of piano and voice, Gertz's approach is extremely creative and personable to each student. She explores many ways to cater to the student’s unique abilities, learning styles, and challenges. For instance, some students work great with books, while others need to touch the keys instead of a pencil to paper. She is fantastic at adapting to the needs of each student. She is also known for her imaginative games and activities. If a student asks to learn something in particular, she believes in saying “yes,” because that spark of inspiration is also their drive to persevere.  When something is a challenge or a stretch, she is supportive and makes necessary adjustments, such as simplifying a song to suit the level, or breaking down a big goal into smaller ones.

"I am here to support and guide the student’s self-initiative to improve and develop their skills. I will hold each student accountable - I do expect practice between lessons. I’m a firm believer in the importance of music theory, and skills like sight-reading, notation, and ear training, but I will ensure that we always stay true to the passion and inspiration of the student- be it Rogers and Hammerstein, Queen, or Billie Eilish, or writing your own music- the sky is the limit!"
