About

Education / Training

I began learning martial arts in the 1990s, first studying Wing Chun with my father from 1994–1999. From 2003–2007 I trained at the Nam Yang Pugilistic Association, studying Tiger Crane Kung Fu, Shuang Yun Pei Ho, San Da, and Tong Ling Qi Gong. Between 2011–2013 I continued my internal arts training with Justin Marsh, learning Yang‑style Tai Chi, Xing Yi, Ba Gua, and Qi Gong, while also practising Wing Chun with Hampshire Kung Fu. In 2016–2017 I trained in Hong Kong with Cho Sifu, focusing on Chen‑style Tai Chi (hand forms and sword) and Ba Duan Jin.

In 2018 I studied the 108‑movement Taoist Tai Chi form in Basingstoke, and from 2018–2022 I continued developing both the 108 Taoist form and Chen‑style Tai Chi independently during the pandemic. Since October 2022 I have trained at Tai Chi 4 Health and Wellbeing, studying the Cheng Man Ching 37‑step form and Taichi Qigong Shibashi.

My background also includes ongoing practice in mindful movement and falls-prevention approaches, which I integrate into all my classes.

Professional Experience

I have led Tai Chi workshops for local wellbeing festivals, community events, and private groups, with a focus on gentle forms that support balance, confidence, and relaxation. My work has been consistently well‑received, with many five‑star reviews across multiple platforms. I currently provide Tai Chi and Qigong sessions for several organisations, including Walfinch (since February 2026), Southampton Manor Care Home (since October 2025), Be Active Hampshire (three separate 12‑week courses), and Light Up Drama (October 2025, one‑off event).

I have also worked to produce online video courses to accompany books and apps.

Teaching Experience

I specialise in teaching seniors and complete beginners, offering group classes, workshops, and one‑to‑one coaching. Since August 2025, I have designed and delivered structured Tai Chi programmes that build coordination, body awareness, and confidence through clear progressions and supportive guidance. I also mentor motivated students who are preparing for future teacher‑training pathways, helping them deepen their understanding of safe, accessible teaching. I currently have four 1:1 students that I regularly teach online.

I currently teach regular Tai Chi and Qigong classes at the following community venues:

  • Totton and Eling Community Centre — since August 2025

  • Cricket Pavilion, Over Wallop — since August 2025

  • Velmore Community Centre — since January 2026

  • Woolston Community Centre — since February 2026

Gareth will guide you every step of the way. He is a qualified Tai Chi & Qigong Instructor with the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain. He has practiced Tai Chi for over ten years and Qigong for over twenty. He has spent over six years training in kung fu and has dedicated the past fifteen years to meditation, bringing a deep sense of calm and expertise to his teachings.

These classes are perfect for complete beginners, and can be done seated or standing, depending on what feels right for you. There’s no need to worry about experience or fitness level—just bring your curiosity and wear clothing suitable for exercise.

Curriculum

I teach Tai Chi in a clear, structured, and encouraging way that helps students feel confident in their bodies from the very first session. My approach focuses on slow, mindful movement, whole‑body integration, and practical explanations that make each posture easy to understand and enjoyable to learn.

I break movements down step‑by‑step, offering gentle corrections and simple cues that help you feel grounded, balanced, and relaxed. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning to practice, I meet you exactly where you are and guide you at a pace that feels comfortable and achievable.

Every session is personalised — we focus on what you need, whether that’s improving balance, reducing stress, building confidence, or learning the form with clarity and ease. My goal is to create a calm, supportive learning space where you can move well, breathe well, and enjoy the process.
