About

Born and raised in the South East of England, I began learning the tuba at the age of 12. At 14, I won a scholarship to study as a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where I studied with Paul Lawrence (London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra). At the age of 15 I attended and took part in a lecture and group performance by the American jazz tubist Howard Johnson, and developed an interest playing the tuba in a wide range of musical styles, from classical to jazz and improvised music, and traditional music from around the world. I graduated from Goldsmith's College, University of London, where I studied with David Powell (London Sinfonietta, Loose Tubes), and have enjoyed a busy professional career, which has taken me around the world, to many major festivals and tours. Since 2007, I have been living in Tokyo, Japan, where I have enjoyed a busy career as a recording and performing artist. I have been featured as a musician on over 60 album releases, including releases with my own group, FU-CHING-GIDO, which tours internationally.

I aim to provide my students with a good foundation for music making, with a focus on developing a strong reliable basic technique. I also aim to encourage my students to explore a wide range of music, and pursue the musical styles which interest them, so that they can develop a wide and healthy appetite for music and become well-rounded musicians themselves.

Depending the level, I like to start absolute beginners without a text book, to find a technique for making a sound which suits them physically, and working from that. Depending on my student's interests, we would then proced to a textbook, such as KJOS Tradition Of Excellence, but it is important to me to supplement any method with a wide range of different styles of music. For more advanced students, I would recommend the Blazevich Studies, and Bach 'Cello Suites as fundamental study texts.
