About

My name is Hailey Showers. I specialize in all the woodwinds and Piano. I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Bassoon Performance in 2018 from The University of Akron. I was the pianist for the Poe United Methodist Church for 9 years and I also accompanied some soloists at UA. In terms of awards, I have received the John Phillip Sousa Award and 2nd place in the annual BGSU Bassoon Concerto Competition. In addition to my education at UA, I took private bassoon lessons for 5 years and piano lessons for 11 years. I have been teaching lessons since high school. Throughout high school I taught flute, piccolo, and mallet percussion lessons. My main focus in those lessons was to teach memorization skills so that students could pass their playing tests. We also heavily focused on intonation, posture, and proper fingerings. In college, I mainly taught piano lessons and tutored students in Class Piano 1&2 and Keyboard Harmony 1&2. I have not had the opportunity to have any official bassoon students, but I have given small masterclasses for colleagues, friends, and family.

My performance resume is quite extensive and includes such ensembles as: The La Jolla Symphony,The San Diego Concert Band, The Villa Musica Symphony and Symphonic Band, The University of Akron Symphony Orchestra, and The Renova Festival Orchestra among many more. I have also been selected to audition for the Dallas Symphony, Redlands Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and the West Virginia Symphony (The latter 3 canceled due to Covid-19)

Teaching Style

I offer beginner and intermediate lessons on piano and bassoon. My teaching style is very flexible. I make each lesson extremely personalized to each student. While providing structure and forming a strong foundation, I still make sure to include pieces and styles that the student wants to learn. I studied classical and religious piano throughout my childhood, but every few weeks my teacher would let me work on a jazz piece. Branching out to something that the student is actively excited about really helps to keep them interested in practicing and gives them a sense of control over their own education. After each lesson I will always make sure to send the student an email to sum up what they learned and what to prepare for next time. I am constantly finding new music and articles and I will always make sure to forward any interesting music or information. In the future I would like to start holding virtual recitals so that students can show off their progress (it will be completely optional of course.)

Curriculum

Since most music stores and online distributors of music are shut down due to Covid-19, I will be scanning and emailing music until this situation clears up. For bassoon I always recommend any method books by Weissenborn, Milde, and Weait. I also have a master list of bassoon solos both well known and lesser known. Since there are hundreds of programs for piano, I will find the best one to suit each student when the time comes. All Alfred series books are usually are good place to start for any student and a personal favorite of mine. The Faber and Bastien book series are both also great options!
