A classically trained pianist and vocalist, Isabella is passionate about education. Originally from Brazil and with a background in engineering and business, she approaches teaching from a problem-solving perspective and recognizes that each student learns differently. She's always looking for the best ways to help students achieve their goals.
As a perfomer, Isabella performs Brazilian jazz, and bossa nova in addition to American Jazz Standards and her original songs. While in Brazil, where she began her training as a classical pianist at age six, Isabella also composed her own music and participated in various competitions, concerts and master classes until the age of 15 when she moved to the United States and began jazz and vocal studies while attending the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, CT. She continues to write and compose music – her album “Blame Destiny” was released in 2017 - and has developed her own unique sound informed by not only her classical training but also her jazz, bossa nova, Brazilian, and pop influences.
Mendes is also the founder and leader of The Bossa Nova Project - a group of rotating musicians that she performs with regularly throughout CT – as well as the founder of IMMusic, a private music studio where she teaches private voice and piano lessons to children and adults as well as develops workshops that she has brought to schools and other community organizations. The school is based in Hamden, CT where Mendes has been recognized as a “Hamden Notable” for excellence in music.

I believe anyone can learn how to play an instrument or sing a song. With kindness, patience, dedication and fun, we can make learning music enjoyable. Whether you're looking to learn it as a hobby, or just would like musical exposure for your children or if you'd like to pursue music as a career, my lessons are catered to each student's individual needs.
I am a classically trained pianist with over 25 years of teaching experience. My students range from 5 to 80 years old. It's never too late to learn! All ages and levels welcomed. I also have an MBA and have experience coaching and mentoring students in career development. With that experience, I am able to coach young artists set up their website, market themselves, order business cards, negotiate contracts and more!

Creative Piano for Kids!

My daughter loves the Creative Piano classes. She looks forward to it all week! The classes are engaging and fun. Each week my daughter is challenged to compose music using a different technique such as using all white keys, all black keys, blues scales, whole tone scales, chromatic scales, songs with words, songs without words, call and response songs, and songs with patterns. Creative Piano inspires my daughter to compose her own melodies, create harmonies, and to use the piano for creativity and self-expression.

I take my time to get to know the student and their learning styles and personality to find the best method for each student.
• For piano, I have found great success with Faber series, as well as newest methods such as Melody Payne scales, and the Cascade Method and The Musician Cat.
• For voice, The Full Voice is a wonderful method for young singers!
• For Brazilian Bossa Nova, we work with rhythm, and listening and integrating the feel of the music to the performance (piano and/or voice).
