About

Hi,
My name is Jay and I'm a Vocal Coach and Guitar Instructor.
Having taught for more than 5 years, I have more than ample experience in teaching learners about the intricacies and delights that lie within the musical world!!
I have studied Jazz with a focus on Voice and also taken Grades for the acoustic guitar - namely the Trinity Grade 5 in plectrum guitar.
I specialize in teaching beginners - guiding and introducing them to this wonderful world full of musical colors.

I am a professional musician and being an active performer helps me guide my students through whatever is current in the music scene - be it a new artist or a new genre that is popping up.

I have had the privelege of performing at some of the top venues in India including Siri Fort Auditorium, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi.
I am a regular performer and have performed at venues like the Hard Rock Cafe.
During my college career, I participated regularly in the college circuit competitions and won more than 50 awards.

I am an experienced trainer, having taught for more than 5 years, both offline and online.
I taught at India's premiere music school - Furtados School Of Music.

During the pandemic, I also headed the music team/ department at an edtech company called MyLive Tuition. I used to draw up lesson plans and formulate strategies to teach incoming students.

My teaching style is divided into 4 main segments.

1. Technique
Technique is the core building block, whether it is for singing or playing the guitar.
I focus a lot on my students getting the right technique to do something, something that becomes muscle memory and stays with you forever!

2. Theory
Knowing how music and musical notes work gives you a WHY and HOW to add to the WHAT that we cover within technique. Theory training enables students to understand how songs work and what makes them tick.

3. Ear Training
You're as good a singer/guitarist/musician as good you are a listener. To be a good musician, it is imperative that one is able to listen and hear patterns within the music - something which I focus a lot on!

4. Application
Just being all technical definitely would make things boring. So, we cover songs (I tend to pick the students'favorite tracks) on the guitar/ voice to apply whatever we have learnt during the class. Because the end goal of learning any instrument is to be able to play/ sing!!

I have studied Jazz (focus on Voice) under renowned Latin Jazz artist Magos Herrera.
I have taken the Grade 5 exam from Trinity College London for Plectrum Guitar.

I have a APPLICATION based teaching method, focusing on practically getting down into the nitty-gritties of the instrument - be it guitar or voice.
