About

Jack Hickenbotham has been playing electric guitar for nearly 20 years.  After developing a love for classical guitar in high school, he attended George Mason University for Music Education with a focus in classical guitar. When Jack began playing ukulele in college,  he applied the fingerstyle techniques he had learned from classical guitar to the instrument.

Jack taught lessons through Music and Arts in Springfield, VA for eight years before moving to New Jersey.  He also gave lessons with Potomac Arts Academy in Fairfax, VA, and Create More Music Studios in Loudon County, VA.

Jack has been teaching privately since 2011, and has been teaching virtually since January 2020. He will commonly focus on material, musical styles, or techniques that the student wants to work on, as opposed to following a strict syllabus. Jack has taught out of various guitar and ukulele method books, and is open to using any that the student may already have. However, he typically does not require students to have a method book for virtual lessons.

The majority of Jack's students are between 10 and 15 years old. However, Jack has had students as young as 5 years old, as well as a few students in their 70's. Most of his students have little or no previous music knowledge or experience before beginning lessons with him.

Jack is open to any number of guitar and ukulele method books. If a student has a method book, he is willing to work with the student through the book. He will also commonly take "detours" from the book to work on various songs from other sources, which he provides for the student.

Jack strongly encourages all his students to seek out new material either in books or online. While he can provide plenty of musical material for his students, he knows from experience that one progresses in music even more if they have a great variety of material to draw from.
