About

¡Hola! I'm Jacob, and I am excited to be your Spanish instructor. I have a BA and MA in Hispanic literatures and cultures and recently earned my PhD in Spanish Literatures and Cultures. I have 7+ years in higher education teaching experience, including 3+ years of private tutoring in Spanish. I have taught courses that range from Spanish 101 to advanced topics in literature and Latin American culture. I have worked with students from ages 10 - 60 and enjoy teaching them all.

One of my students at the end of the semester said, "Wow Jacob, your voice in English sounds so weird. I've never really heard you speak in English." This is my favorite compliment! That's how I run the show. That being said, I certainly use "teacher talk" with younger or newer learners, with plenty of hand gestures to ease students into a full immersive style. I prefer to minimize grammar and vocabulary lessons and focuses more on implementing and teaching strategies to use the language in conversation. This way we can be flexible in discussing topics that are meaningful and relevant to the student in order to maintain high motivation to learn the target language. I successfully teach Spanish while talking about anything and everything, from fantasy novels to videogames to poetry, movies, current events and environmentalism in Latin America.

BA in Spanish - Western Washington University (2013)
MA in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures - University of Kansas (2015)
Phd in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures - Rutgers University (2019)

I have been taught in the communicative approach and that is my teaching method. We focus on conversational and comprehension skills live with some grammar and writing sprinkled in and assign homework that stresses vocabulary and grammar. I prefer to use the free, open source text book at acceso.ku.edu at the core of my lessons that I helped developed while I got my MA there as well as The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice text. I pull from other text books that I have used, such as Vistazos and Dicho y Hecho. We can decide to what extent you would like homework to be assigned or if you would like me to tutor as a supplement to curriculum you are already invovled in.
