Jacob Thro
About
I started with piano lessons at age 8, followed by cello a year later, and jazz piano in high school. I studied both instruments through the college level. In high school I became (re)obssessed with The Beatles and taught myself guitar and bass. I've played in a wide variety of ensembles, orchestras, and bands, both academically and professionally. In college I majored in audio production and earned a Bachelor's degree. I have a home studio and I work with an ecclectic group of artists on a variety of recording projects. I have been teaching since 2007.
Teaching Style
I don't follow specific methods or styles, though I do use them as a foundation or starting point. I prefer to find the right approach for each individual student. I've always been a slow learner in many respects and I had amazing teachers who went out of their way to help me. I do my best to follow their example.
Curriculum
For piano I typically use one of the Faber Piano Adventures series, depending on the age and level of the student. They are a great series of books that make a solid but flexible foundation to expand the lessons in whatever directions we want. With guitar I mostly use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method, but I don't use it as thouroughly or consistently as Piano Adventures.
