About
Born and raised in New Orleans, I was immersed in one of the world's richest musical traditions, learning as a young teenager by playing gigs, jamming with friends, and making music alongside other musicians. Those experiences taught me that the fastest path to becoming a confident musician is to listen, adapt, and keep the music moving—a philosophy that remains at the heart of my teaching today. While my musical roots are in jazz, I later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the University of New Orleans, where I received rigorous classical training and developed the technical, interpretive, and sight-reading skills essential to my professional career.
For more than 15 years, I have worked as a collaborative pianist, church musician, choir director, and private instructor, accompanying singers, instrumentalists, and ensembles in both rehearsal and performance environments. This work demands exceptional sight-reading, a deep understanding of music theory and stylistic interpretation, and the versatility to move comfortably between classical, jazz, sacred, and contemporary repertoire. These real-world experiences allow me to offer students far more than piano instruction alone—I teach complete musicianship, emphasizing confident performance, collaboration, strong musical fundamentals, and expressive artistry across all styles and disciplines. Whether you're a beginner discovering music for the first time or an experienced pianist looking to refine your skills, my goal is to help you become an independent, well-rounded musician while developing the discipline, creativity, and confidence that extend well beyond the piano.
Teaching Style
I believe every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to the individual's goals, interests, and experience level. While I maintain high standards and encourage disciplined practice, my lessons are relaxed, engaging, and designed to build confidence rather than intimidation. I emphasize developing complete musicianship—not simply learning to play notes on a page. Students learn how to read music fluently, understand theory, develop strong technique, listen critically, improvise when appropriate, and perform with confidence. Above all, I encourage students to make music with other people whenever possible. My goal is to equip students with the skills to become independent, expressive musicians who can enjoy making music for a lifetime.
Curriculum
For beginning students, I most often use the Faber Piano Adventures series because it builds strong, lasting musicianship from the very first lesson. Rather than having students identify every note by letter name, the method emphasizes reading by direction and interval, helping students recognize musical patterns the way fluent musicians do. This allows students to develop confident reading skills alongside healthy technique without becoming dependent on memorization or note-by-note decoding. I also appreciate the carefully sequenced pacing, with each new concept introduced gradually and reinforced through thoughtfully selected repertoire. Many pieces include teacher duet accompaniments, giving students the rewarding experience of making music with another musician from the very beginning—something I believe is essential to musical growth.
As students advance, lessons become increasingly individualized. We work through standard repertoire, etudes, collaborative literature, and music selected to strengthen specific technical and musical skills while developing greater precision, artistry, and stylistic understanding. Whether preparing for auditions, competitions, performances, or simply pursuing personal goals, I help students build the confidence, discipline, and musicianship needed to become thoughtful, expressive, and independent performers.
