About

I'm a certified music teacher in my 18th year of teaching, and have taught band, jazz band, choir, jazz choir, music composition, group piano, as well as many private voice and piano lessons throughout the years. At age 5, I started intensively studying classical piano, and with determination and hard work, won many local and national piano competitions. Having received several grants and scholarships to study music, I graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance degree, as well as a minor in Spanish. I have performed in many concert venues Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater in a variety of roles (soloist, accompanist, conductor, background vocalist), and currently continue to practice and pursue excellence in my art.

After teaching music in the New York City Public School system, I decided to break into the international school circuit, and have taught in the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Japan, and currently in Panamá. All of my travels have deepened my passion for music, as I see that music truly connects us. Whether it's playing darbuka in a the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, dancing eskista at a party in Addis Ababa, or teaching my kids how to play the timbales for "Murga Panamá", I see that music and art have the ability to bring us all together.

I believe that teaching is truly a partnership, where the teacher and student co-create the learning experience. I always ask the student their motivation for studying music, and the lessons are tailored to both the goal itself as well as all of the skills connected to that goal. We cover proper technique, stylistic and historical analysis, and music theory. As a practicing musician myself, I have learned the importance of versatility. While students benefit from specializing in a certain genre of music, I hope to give my students the confidence and skill set to be able to play in multiple styles.

When we meet, I get to know the student both as a human and a musician. What have their prior musical experiences been? Do they have prior knowledge? What music do they listen to on a daily basis? Then, I ask and see how they best learn, and tailor the lessons to their style. I have experience with students applying to college for further music study, and students who just want to learn their favorite songs. Book a lesson with me, and we can both journey through music together!
