About
Hello! I have been playing piano with my family from the age of 6, pursuing professional piano lessons around the age of 12. After attending college, where I received a BS degree in Music, as well as 5 years' experience accompanying choirs, ensembles, and bands, I began teaching in my own studio and have done so since 2012.
I enjoy playing music by ear, accompanying others, and have developed the much needed skill to read music on the fly through choir accompaniment experience. When I'm playing music for my own pleasure, I typically like putting a soothing spin on contemporary pop music or a song that might otherwise not be considered ideal for a piano cover.
Teaching Style
I have experience teaching a wide range of ages and experience levels, from ages 4-60, beginner to advanced. I enjoy walking students through the process of understanding music in all of its complexities. My methods can cater to a student's (or parent's) preferences, but I typically value music theory in addition to practical piano skills and technique. If a student is curious about playing by ear, composing, or more classical piano technique, I can adapt to focus on these areas of study.
Curriculum
I enjoy working through all-in-one course books (primarily Alfred), but this will vary as the student progresses or expresses different interests. Supplementary theory or warm-up/technique books might be implemented, but I also enjoy working with students without books once they have acquired enough music theory and technique ability. We may take a break and learn to compose a favorite pop song, practice to perfect a classical masterpiece, or site-read some of the student's favorite holiday tunes.
Credentials & Affiliations
I have taught in my private studio, ages 4-60, from 2012 to the present. I also taught in affiliation with the prestigious Cumberland Valley School of Music for several years. I studied Music at Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing, Michigan, where I received a bachelor's degree with a focus on piano. Here I received the college's Outstanding Music Award (2012-2013), Choir Award (2011), and other academic achievements. I also received collegian teaching experience as a Teacher's Assistant, frequently filling in for lectures and facilitating rehearsals. During my time at Great Lakes, I toured with the choir, various ensembles, and helped to lead a summer music camp for vocalists and musicians alike for four years. These tours would take us throughout the Midwest, as far south as Tennessee and as far north as Canada--mainly at religious institutions or other affiliated colleges or universities. Finally, my career led me to coordinate a music lesson program and its instructors, facilitating 150+ students.
