About

Hello!

My name is Jessica. I've been teaching violin and viola for over twenty years. I love helping people discover the thrill of making music by themselves and with friends.

I fell in love with music at an early age. While visiting my grandparents the Christmas I was five, all the grandkids were supposed to put on a Christmas recital for the family. My brother and I were supposed to sing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," but after I heard my cousins play the piano, I knew I wanted to do that. My grandma let me sit at the piano and asked what I was going to play, but of course I had no idea because I'd never touched a piano before. Later, my mom explained that my cousins could play because they'd had lessons, and I asked if I could get lessons. So the following fall, I started piano lessons when I started kindergarten.

A few years later, I took up the violin when it was offered at school, and that became my primary instrument.

I played all through school, attended university on a music scholarship, and music has been a significant part of my life ever since, both playing and teaching.

Teaching Style

My goal is to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to have confidence to achieve their goals.

I believe music lessons should be a positive experience that students look forward to. I bring a positive and fun attitude to the lesson, providing encouragement and gentle correction. I want my students to know they'll improve their skills at each lesson and gain new tools to work through difficulties on their own between lessons.

Curriculum

For beginning students, I use the Suzuki method books. They provide a thorough and well-paced progression to build skills and play enjoyable music. I also use the Sevcik etudes to build finger strength and dexterity for all students who need it. For advancing students, I use Introducing the Positions to learn higher positions.
