About

2023 TEACHER OF THE YEAR - AUDIO EAR TRAINING!

Hi, I am Joanna, a music theorist, singer and choral conductor. I specialise in teaching ear trainingmusic theory for singers and songwriting.  I am also a visual artist, so art is really my whole life.

I work with amateurs since 2013. I am a very empathic person, so I understand all the struggles, that most of the students are dealing with. Feel free to book a trial lesson and ask me any questions you may have.

I started my education at the age of 8. I played violin and piano. As a teenager, I fell in love with singing and have educated myself in this speciality since then. I started my college education in 2009 at The Felix Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz (Poland). I obtained my Master's degree in Choral Conducting and Music Education in 2014. In 2020 I succesfully finished two years of studies towards a Master's in Music Theory. Since 2018 I have been an owner of a music education studio where I teach ear training and music theory (primarily for singers) and singing (modern and classical). I really enjoy singing jazz standards with all of the harmonic possibilities. Currently, I work with romantic songs of one of the best Polish composers in music history -  Fryderyk Chopin - in a modern approach.  I feel like music is an endless road to creation, education and fun.

Ear Training

As a singer, I use my voice a lot during ear training classes. Be prepared to use your diaphragm and remember to breathe properly during my classes! I also use the piano and music programs for generating different timbres to make students responsive to various tones. I prepare every single topic to student possibilities and expectations. In the ear training classes I use relative solmnization (movable 'do' solfege), which is perfect for vocalists. I teach the basics of writing notes and reading scores, but I do not force to learn notes if the student does not want to. I have developed a method of learning ear training without writing notes.
I send the class notes to the student after each class. I work on my own materials developed over 15 years of research.

Music Theory

I teach music theory lessons according to the student's expectations and abilities. I introduce the skills of writing and reading notes, I explain musical phenomena in various musical styles. I teach theory based on its history and the history of music in general. Music theory sounds boring, but trust me, it's not. It's a bit like math - very logical. The more you know, the simpler everything around music seems. And all this based on musical performance and listening to music.

Songwriting

In this course, I introduce you to all the technical aspects of harmony. We will be working with your music knowledge and creativity. We can work with developing your ideas or with composing a song from a simple melody. I always try to adjust the lesson to my student. Don't be afraid to share your compositions! I will teach you how to work with your voice and an instrument so it will be useful for you during the composing process. Every lesson will be very engaging for both of us. The music theory is complicated, but finally, it will become as beautiful and complete as a landscape. I promise - we will find some easy way for you to understand harmony and form. After every lesson, I will leave you with some extra exercises and notes. It will help you practise between our lessons. I really enjoy the music variations and endless possibilities, so I hope we will have some great fun together! Please contact me if you have any questions.
