About

Joe is co-founder of the internet sensation Melodica Men as well as an award-winning performer and composer. Joe has traveled the world from South Korea to Lithuania performing music, been featured on TV and with symphony orchestras, and his videos have been viewed over 100 million times.

Since graduating from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University with dual Masters degrees in both Music Education and Bass Trombone Performance, Joe has focused on teaching private piano lessons to beginners because he has a deep passion for sharing the language and joy of music.

As a composer, Joe's trombone and piano compositions have been performed by musicians in the New York Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra, Houston Symphony and others. While at the Peabody Conservatory, Joe was awarded the Azalia H. Thomas Prize for Instrumentalist after earning a 4.0 in Music Theory.

As a trombonist, Joe is the only person to have won both the National Solo Competition and National Composition Competition at the American Trombone Workshop, and he has performed at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival.

I'm very positive, patient and encouraging with all my students.

For my adult students, I first find out what your reasons and goals are for wanting to learn piano, and then I try to get you playing the music you want to play as soon as possible. If learning to read music is one of your goals, then we can test out a note-reading app that I'm currently working on.

For my trombone students, we often focus on preparing for school auditions, and I heavily emphasize the fundamentals of playing (e.g., long tones, lip slurs).

For my younger piano students, my goal is to first get them having fun playing the piano. As they progress, I begin showing them how to practice by breaking down complex problems into achievable components. I try to light a fire within them to become self-disciplined and set their own goals. Ultimately, my aim is to produce self-sufficient learners who are able to continue making music for the rest of their lives.
