I started playing clarinet in a very good public school band program. My high school band was good enough to perform at Yankee Stadium during the World Series in 1976. Upon graduating from high school in 1980 I attended Montclair State University where I studied clarinet, saxophone and flute, graduating in 1986 with a degree in music education. I have 15 years of experience working in public schools as a band director and over 30 years of experience as a private woodwind instructor. I specialize in both classical music and jazz. In addition to clarinet, I play alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.
The main points that I focus on in lessons include: tone production, articulation and phrasing. I utilize digital tuners and metronomes to emphasize the importance of playing in tune and in time. I train my students to identify numerous scales, chords and tonal centers, in music, in order to develop both sight reading skills and the ability to improvise when there is little or no music in front of them.
