John Jenkins
About
Howdy!
I'm John Jenkins, a full time guitarist from Burleson, Tx. I have been playing guitar professionally since 1975, and teaching since 1976. Since 2007, teaching and performing on the guitar have been my sole means of support. Between 2007 and 2017 I averaged over 200 performances a year, while maintaining 15 to 20 students. I've slowed down a little, but still have a regular student load, and gig frequently.
With the coming of the covid19 pandemic, I began teaching my students online, something I had been curious about for some time. My students and I figured out the basics as we went, but now I am looking for an established, supportive platform to continue online guitar teaching. I am excited about the possibilities of Lessonface, and look forward to continuing to share my love of the guitar with many new students!
Teaching Style
My teaching style is student centered. Each student is unique, and has their own idea of what they want to accomplish when they start lessons. My job is to discover that idea, and help them make that vision a reality. I can teach a student to read music and understand theory, strum basic chords for fun, work out with arpeggios and scales for dexterity and fretboard mastery, or learn to play as part of their band or church music team....or all of the above. My students have ranged from complete beginners to professional players. I don't pretend to know more than I actually do. If a student comes to me needing something I can't provide, I am happy to refer them to someone who can. I love playing guitar, and sharing my knowledge and experience of it. My students' progress is always my priority in teaching.
Curriculum
My default guitar method series is The Hal Leonard Guitar Method. I also use Mel Bay material for students who already have a background in reading music. Alfred Publications has several good genre series. (Jazz, Fingerstyle, etc). I recommend many other materials for specific situations, such as Al Politano's Chords, Scales, and Arpeggios for the Guitarist. I also write exercises and charts for students as needed.
