John Marshall
About
Over the years I have presented lectures and other programs for the Embassy of Japan, the National Associated Japan-America Societies, MAFA, Convergence, Northern and Southern Handweavers, Surface Design, untold numbers of guilds and museums throughout North America and Japan. I have had solo shows sponsored by the US State Department, Kodansha, and the Embassy of Japan. I have appeared in group shows at the De Young Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Textile Museum, SF Asian Art Museum, and more.
I have had my work appear in Threads, Ornament, FiberArts, American Craft, Surface Design Journal, KateiZenka, Shufunotomo, Sophia, and many others. I am a regular contributor to the on-line magazine Turkey Red Journal. I maintain an informative web site at www.JohnMarshall.to, serve as the “answer man” for a Japanese site, www.Ichiroya.com.
I have been working on a series of how-to DVDs on the subject of Katazome, with many side-project DVDS featuring Kyoukechi and other techniques and topics.
My book Make Your Own Japanese Clothes has been in print since 1988, and has never slacked in sales.
More recently I have published Singing the Blues-Soulful Dyeing for All Eternity (2018), A Collectors Guide to Indigo (2019), A Field Guide to Japanese Textiles (2020), and so on.
I love sharing information and I feel I am successful in communicating my passion for the ingenuity and intelligence humans bring to the creation of textiles and fiber arts to my students and fellow addicts.
